Offshore Aquaculture near Ashkelon
Presentation
We are currently creating a masterplan for offshore aquaculture near Ashkelon, for the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Offshore Aquaculture near Ashkelon plan aims to advance the practice of fish farming in the open sea. This is part of the need to develop the economy of Israel's marine space, and combine environmental and economic and research aspects.
The Mediterranean Sea is the most overfished place in the world, and fish populations in it have dropped dramatically over the past fifty years. That's why aquaculture is so needed.
The aquaculture plan designates an area of 32.1 square kilometers for aquaculture in the open sea, where it will be possible to raise fish and market them by different breeders, as well as advance and diversify technologies that can be applied in this agricultural field.
The plan is located near Ashkelon, at a distance of 10 km from the coast. At a distance of 0.5 km to the east of the plan is the marine nature reserve Evtah.
At the same time, we are designing a logistical operational hub for aquaculture at an existing industrial port near Ashkelon.
